Free The Dance is a student organization at Arizona State University that offers free dance classes for students, as well as the public.

“I created Free The Dance as a place where people can come and unite with their love for dance,” Jay Bouey, student and president of Free the Dance, said. “It’s very hard to find free dance classes anymore.”

Jay Bouey, a Junior studying Dance Education at the ASU School of Dance, created Free The Dance in the fall of 2011.

The organization is entirely student ran and organized. Each week a different student choreographer teaches a class in a specialized dance style. Past styles have included contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, African and even belly dancing.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for students who have never taken a dance class or have never choreographed to come share their talent,” said student and Vice President Cassandra Akpan.

Choreographers who have taught at Free The Dance have gone on to professionally choreograph for showcases and local studios, Akpan said.

In addition to free weekly classes, Free The Dance offers a performance aspect in which students can attain studio-to-stage experience while performing at events around Phoenix and Tucson. Community outreach, such as volunteering for after school dance programs, is also a mission of Free The Dance.
